8 Elected as AAAS Fellows

Eight faculty from ��о�� are among 471 scientists, engineers and innovators newly elected as fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the society announced today (March 27). AAAS fellows are recognized for their exceptional achievements in science, including research, teaching, administration and science communication.

Presidential Awards to Faculty

Several faculty at the ��о��, are among the recipients of presidential awards for excellence in STEM mentoring and research announced by the White House Jan. 13 and 14.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring was established by the White House in 1995 and is administered by the National Science Foundation. The most prestigious mentoring award bestowed by the White House, it recognizes mentors who work with underrepresented groups to fully develop the nation's human resources in STEM.

Plant Biologist Siobhan Brady Named HHMI Investigator

Siobhan Brady, a professor in the Department of Plant Biology and Genome Center at the ��о��, has been selected as a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator. The prestigious Investigator program, which Brady describes as “life changing,” will provide her with roughly $9 million in research support over a seven-year term, with the option to renew.

Plant Researchers and Molecular Biologist Elected to National Academy of Sciences

Three professors from the ��о��, have been elected as members of the National Academy of Sciences. They are among 120 new members and 24 international members announced by the academy April 30.

Members are elected in recognition of their contributions to original research. Membership in the academy is considered one of the highest honors a scientist can achieve.

Estella Atekwana Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Estella Atekwana, dean of the College of Letters and Science at the ��о��, has been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the academy announced April 24.

Maize Researcher Wins Prestigious National Academy of Sciences Prize

Jeffrey Ross-Ibarra, a professor in the Department of Evolution and Ecology at the ��о��, has been awarded the prestigious National Academy of Sciences Prize in Food and Agriculture Sciences for 2024.

Social Justice Awards Presented

��о��’ Hispanic-Serving Institution Community Council, an undergraduate student and a Ph.D. candidate are among the recipients of Social Justice Awards from the university’s 12th annual Equity Summit, held May 30.

The Equity Summit is organized by the ��о��-sponsored Sacramento Area Youth Speaks, or SAYS, and sponsored by Undergraduate Admissions; the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and the School of Education.
