For example, the microbes are constantly creating new types of illnesses, while the plants — sometimes with the help of breeders — are developing new immunities.

It’s something plant geneticist Luca Comai, Ph.D. ’80, a distinguished professor of plant biology, has seen firsthand through his decades of research into plant chromosomes.

��о�� Tops Nation in Sustainability Rankings

The ��о��, is the “greenest” campus in the United States for the ninth year in a row, according to the 2024 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings published today (Dec. 12).

The rankings, established by the University of Indonesia in 2010, also place ��о�� as the world’s seventh most sustainable university, the 12th consecutive year the campus has been in the world’s top 10.

��о�� Health Vice Chancellor and CEO David Lubarsky to Retire

��о��, Chancellor Gary S. May announced today that David Lubarsky, ��о�� Health’s vice chancellor of human health sciences and chief executive officer, will retire from the university effective Feb. 15, 2025. After his retirement, Lubarsky will become president and CEO of Westchester Medical Center Health Network, a nine-hospital health system near where he grew up, in Valhalla, New York.

��о�� to Join Mountain West Conference

Emmanuel “Manny” Garcia Pereida of Oakland wore a ��о�� cap and gown with a stole identifying him as a first-generation college graduate. His name sounded over the arena’s speakers. He crossed the stage and shook hands with the chancellor. His family cheered.

UPDATED: Football Advances to Quarterfinals With Commanding Win

Updated Dec. 9: ��о�� football on Saturday rolled over Illinois State 42-10, earning a place in the quarterfinal round of the Football Championship Subdivision, or FCS, playoffs.

“I'm proud of the team,” Head Coach Tim Plough said. “Illinois State is a great football team and early on they came out and punched us in the mouth. But our team continues to show great resolve, and their resilience is what makes them a special team.”
